Heaters come with a 1-year warranty except for chemical damage. From experience we have learned that 99% of all heater problems are caused by chemical imbalance!
We have seen new heaters sustain major, expensive, damage in as little as a couple of months after installation. Hot water, bather load and the small amount of water in a spa causes rapid fluctuation of chemical levels. The new heath regulations recommend that you check your spa at least twice a day for chlorine and pH levels. We recommend that you also test your total alkalinity level daily.

Use Your Test Kit!
Suggested chemical levels:
· Free chlorine 3 to 8 p.p.m.
· pH 7.6 to 7.8 - soda ash raises pH

Total alkalinity 120 to 150 p.p.m. - baking soda raises total alkalinity

Spas usually get their heaviest use over the weekend, when they don’t get tested. By Monday the damage has been done.
Bedsides testing, regularly changing the water in a spa helps to protect your heater and spa surface. If your spa plaster is becoming etched or changing to a dark blue, black or green color, this is a good indication of chemical damage. The copper in the heater that is being corroded away by low pH is where this comes from.

Heater with number labels that correspond to the list below. The Hayward HeatPro takes the heat from the surrounding air and uses it to heat the water in your pool.

During heat pump operation, liquid freon from inside the unit is pumped through the system (A) and is turned into a heated gas. This happens when heat is taken from the surrounding air (B) as it is drawn through the evaporator by the fan. The compressor (C) receives this warmer gas and compresses it to a higher pressure, resulting in the freon reaching even higher temperatures. As the unit sends the heated gas through the heat exchanger, the gas gives up its heat to the surrounding water (D). The freon is then reverted to its liquid state which completes the cycle (A).

(F) The water, which is being forced through the heat exchanger (D) by your pool pump, is heated by three to five degrees as it passes through the heat exchanger. The water, now warmer, then flows back into your pool (G).

HOW LONG SHOULD MY HEATER LAST??
The answer is probably not as long as you think or hope it will! Heaters are expensive pieces of equipment that are very subject to chemical damage caused by chemical imbalance. If you have a gas heater over 5 years old or an electric heater over 3 years old someone has been monitoring the chemicals right. After examining the fire brick and burner tray there is always the repair or replace decision. Sometime you end up spending almost as much to repair something as you would on a new one.
Another thing to consider when trying to decide on a new heater is the fact that the newer models are much more energy efficient than the older ones. You no longer have to have copper or stainless steel “heat sinks” on a heater because the firebox is no longer made of heat retaining and heavy concrete. Heaters are instant off now and don’t require the cool down time they used to.

USE YOUR TEST KIT!

Suggested chemical levels:

  • Free chlorine 3.0 - 5.0 ppm max 8 ppm for spa

  • Free chlorine 2.0 - 3.0 ppm max 8 ppm for pool

  • pH 7.4 to 7.6 - soda ash raises pH

  • Total alkalinity 100 to 120 ppm max 180 ppm - baking soda raises total alkalinity

Testing regularly, changing the water in a spa helps to protect your heater and spa surface.

If your spa plaster is becoming etched or changing to a dark blue, black or green color, this is a good indication of chemical damage.

The copper in the heater corrodes away by low pH.
